Azerbaijan Tourist Visa Requirements for UK Citizens (2026 Guide)

Last checked: 22 March 2026

Planning a trip to Azerbaijan with a full British citizen passport?

This guide explains the current tourist entry rules for UK travellers, including whether you need a visa, how long you can stay, passport validity rules, what Azerbaijani border officers may ask to see, electronic systems now in use, costs, and the official government links to check before travel.

This article is restricted to tourist entry for UK citizens. It does not cover work, study, residence permits, journalism, volunteering, or long-stay immigration routes except where needed to explain what does not apply to a normal holiday.

Azerbaijan uses the Azerbaijani manat (AZN) and is not part of the Schengen area.

1. Travel warning and insurance

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) does not advise against travel to all of Azerbaijan, but it does advise against travel to some specific areas.

  • Within 5km of the border with Armenia: FCDO advises against all travel.
  • South-western Azerbaijan affected by the 2020 and 2023 conflict: FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the districts of Kelbajar, Lachin, Qubadli, Zengilan, Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Khojavand, Shusha, Khojali, Khankendi, Aghdam and Tartar.
  • Mine and unexploded ordnance risk: follow Azerbaijani national and local authority advice in any uncleared area.

The UK Government also says your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice.

There is also a heightened risk of regional tension. The current FCDO page says escalation could lead to travel disruption, including possible airspace closures and other unexpected impacts. It also notes drone strike impacts at Nakhchivan International Airport on 5 March 2026.

So while this guide explains the tourist entry requirements for Azerbaijan for UK citizens, you should still check the latest FCDO map and route advice before travelling.

2. Quick answer

Yes, a tourist visa is required for a UK citizen visiting Azerbaijan for a normal holiday.

For most British tourists, the key points are:

  • You must have a visa before travel.
  • The normal tourist route is the official ASAN Visa e-visa system.
  • Standard e-visas are normally single entry and allow a 30-day stay within a 90-day validity period.
  • Your passport should usually be valid for at least 6 months after the date you arrive and have at least 2 blank pages.
  • You can only enter Azerbaijan via air travel without restrictions. Entry by land or sea border is restricted.
  • If you stay in Azerbaijan for more than 15 days, you must register with the State Migration Service.
  • I did not identify an official Azerbaijan-only tourist ETA or other new pre-travel authorisation replacing the visa system for UK travellers.

In simple terms, a UK tourist normally needs to apply online for an Azerbaijani e-visa before flying to the country.

3. Passport and stay rules

If you are travelling to Azerbaijan as a tourist on a full British citizen passport, your passport should meet these conditions:

  • It should usually have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Azerbaijan.
  • It should have at least 2 blank pages for entry stamps.
  • You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or if you try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

For the standard tourist route, the official UK guidance says Azerbaijani e-visas are normally single entry and allow a 30-day visit within a 90-day period of validity.

If you want to stay longer, you can apply to the State Migration Service to extend your 30 days, but you should apply at least 3 days before the end of your permitted stay.

If you overstay without permission, the current UK guidance says you may have to leave the country within 48 hours and pay a fine of AZN 300 to AZN 400.

If you stay in Azerbaijan for more than 15 days, you must register with the State Migration Service. Hotels often do this for guests, but if you are staying in an apartment or private residence you usually need to make sure it is done.

Route planning matters too. Azerbaijan currently allows entry by air without restrictions, while entry via land or sea border is restricted. The land borders with Georgia and Iran are temporarily closed, although the current UK guidance says British nationals may in some cases cross from Iran at Astara with special Azerbaijani authorisation arranged via the FCDO. If your itinerary transits another country on the way to Azerbaijan, that country’s separate passport and visa rules also apply.

4. What Azerbaijani border control may ask for

For a normal UK tourist trip, the current official guidance mainly focuses on having the correct visa and a valid passport.

  • Your valid passport
  • Your printed e-visa, if you used the ASAN Visa system
  • Proof of special authorisation code, if you are trying to use the exceptional Astara border route from Iran

The current UK guidance also says that anyone who has previously visited certain areas in south-western Azerbaijan, including Khankendi, without Azerbaijani permission could be denied entry.

It is also useful to know what the Azerbaijani Embassy in London asks for under the standard tourism visa route, because these are the normal supporting documents behind a tourist trip:

  • An online application form, printed out
  • A passport and passport copy
  • Two colour photos
  • A flight itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking
  • A copy of the travel insurance certificate
  • A receipt for the visa fee

In practice, even if you use the e-visa route, it is sensible to keep your passport, printed visa, accommodation confirmation, return or onward itinerary, and insurance details easy to show.

5. Electronic systems in use, or coming soon

Azerbaijan uses an official electronic visa system for tourists.

There are three systems worth knowing about:

ASAN Visa e-visa system

The main tourist route is the official ASAN Visa system at evisa.gov.az. Official Azerbaijani mission pages say the electronic visa is normally issued within 3 working days, allows a stay of up to 30 days, and carries a published state fee of US$20.

Urgent 3-hour e-visa option

The current UK Government page and official Azerbaijani mission pages both say an urgent 3-hour service exists. However, we did not identify the exact urgent fee amount in the accessible official sources reviewed, so that amount should be checked on the official ASAN Visa portal before payment.

State Migration Service online registration

If you stay in Azerbaijan for more than 15 days, you must register with the State Migration Service online or in person. This is not a visa, but it is an important electronic compliance step for longer short stays.

As of 22 March 2026, I did not identify an official Azerbaijan tourist ETA or a publicly announced near-term replacement for the current visa system in the official sources reviewed.

So the current position for UK tourists is:

  • A visa is required for a normal UK tourist trip
  • The main route is the official ASAN Visa e-visa system
  • An urgent 3-hour e-visa service exists
  • There is no separate Azerbaijan tourist ETA identified right now
  • Longer short stays also trigger State Migration Service registration after 15 days

6. Costs for UK tourist entry

Azerbaijan uses the Azerbaijani manat (AZN). For a UK tourist, the main entry cost is the visa.

Approximate pound conversions below use Central Bank of Azerbaijan rates visible from 19 March 2026 of US$1 = AZN 1.7000 and £1 = AZN 2.2565.

Use these official pages before booking, before applying, and again shortly before departure:

If your circumstances are unusual, for example dual nationality, a passport close to expiry, a longer stay, or a land-border route from Iran, rely on the official pages above rather than third-party websites.

Final check before travel

For UK passport holders, the narrow visa answer is clear: a visa is required for Azerbaijan, and the normal tourist route is the official ASAN Visa e-visa system. The main things to get right are your passport validity, your printed e-visa, the air-entry route, your 15-day registration requirement if you stay longer, and your route planning around the areas where the FCDO advises against travel.
