Bahrain Tourist Visa Requirements for UK Citizens (2026 Guide)

Last checked: 22 March 2026

Planning a trip to Bahrain with a full British citizen passport?

This guide explains the current tourist entry rules for UK travellers, including whether you need a visa, how long you can stay, passport validity rules, what Bahraini border officers may ask to see, electronic systems now in use, costs, and the official government links to check before travel.

This article is restricted to tourist entry for UK citizens. It does not cover work, study, residence permits, journalism, volunteering, or long-stay immigration routes except where needed to explain what does not apply to a normal holiday.

Bahrain uses the Bahraini dinar (BHD) and is not part of the Schengen area.

1. Travel warning and insurance

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all but essential travel to Bahrain.

That means Bahrain should not be treated like a normal beach break, Formula 1 weekend, or city-break destination right now. Even where entry rules allow a UK citizen to get a tourist visa, the wider security picture remains serious.

  • Regional escalation poses significant security risks and has led to travel disruption.
  • You should stay away from areas around security or military facilities.
  • You should also stay away from US facilities and institutions.
  • The current UK advice says Iran continues to strike civilian infrastructure across the region, including ports, hotels, roads, bridges, energy facilities, oil production sites, water systems, and airports.
  • If your presence in Bahrain is not essential, you may wish to consider departing if you judge you can do so safely.
  • Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice.

If you are already in Bahrain, the UK Government says you should register your presence for further updates.

If local authorities advise people to shelter, you should stay indoors or find the nearest safe building or designated shelter. An interior stairwell or a room with as few external walls or windows as possible may give additional protection. Do not approach or touch drone or missile fragments or unusual objects.

Because of the current conflict, you should also keep your departure plans under review and be ready for sudden travel disruption.

2. Quick answer

Yes, a visa is required for a UK citizen visiting Bahrain for tourism.

For most British tourists, the key points are:

  • You must have a visa to visit Bahrain.
  • You can usually get a visa online in advance, from the Bahrain Embassy in the UK, or on arrival.
  • Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive.
  • The current UK guidance says visas are automatically issued for a 2-week period, but visit visas for stays of up to 6 months are also available.
  • I did not identify an official Bahrain tourist ETA or other new pre-travel authorisation replacing the visa system for UK travellers.
  • Most importantly: the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Bahrain because of the current regional war and escalation involving Iran.

In simple terms, a UK tourist can still qualify for a Bahrain visa, but the bigger issue right now is whether the trip is truly essential and whether you are prepared for security and transport disruption.

3. Passport and stay rules

If you are travelling to Bahrain as a tourist on a full British citizen passport, your passport should meet these conditions:

  • It must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Bahrain.
  • You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or if you try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
  • If you hold dual nationality, Bahrain may apply different rules depending on your other nationality.

The current UK guidance says that British citizens must have a visa to visit Bahrain.

You can usually get that visa in one of three ways:

  • Online in advance
  • In advance from the Bahrain Embassy in the UK
  • On arrival

The same UK guidance says visas are automatically issued for a 2-week period, but visit visas for stays of up to 6 months are also available.

You cannot start employment in Bahrain if you enter on a visit visa.

If you overstay your visa, there could be penalties, legal issues, and any work visa application could be affected or cancelled. If you need more time, you can apply to renew your visa with the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs department.

Because of the current conflict, departure planning matters as much as entry planning. If you try to leave Bahrain by road through Saudi Arabia, you should read the latest Saudi travel advice and make sure you have the correct paperwork. If you are travelling on a British Emergency Travel Document, Emergency Passport, or a passport with less than 6 months remaining validity, you should seek official advice before attempting that route.

4. What Bahraini border control may ask for

For a normal UK tourist trip, the current official guidance mainly focuses on having the correct visa and a valid passport. The official Bahraini visa service pages also show the normal supporting documents behind a tourist application.

  • A valid passport
  • Your visa, including a printed copy if you used the online route
  • A hotel reservation
  • A return ticket
  • A three-month bank statement in English showing regular income of 300 to 500 BHD per month, or an amount equivalent to 150 BHD for each day of the visit

The current UK entry guidance also says you may be asked to provide evidence of onward or return travel when you apply.

It is also important to remember that Bahrain’s official visa portal says that holding a visa does not guarantee entry. You still have to meet the conditions on arrival, and a refused entry does not automatically mean a refund.

In practice, it is sensible to keep your passport, printed visa, accommodation confirmation, return or onward itinerary, and bank evidence easy to show.

Because of the current war context, travellers should also expect that security measures, checks, and movement conditions can tighten quickly.

5. Electronic systems in use, or coming soon

Bahrain uses an official electronic visa system for tourists.

There are three systems worth knowing about:

Bahrain official eVisa system

The main digital route is the official Bahrain eVisa system at evisa.gov.bh. The site says it is the only official website to apply for a Bahrain visa and warns travellers to be cautious with third-party websites claiming to help.

Visa on arrival

The current UK Government entry guidance says UK citizens can also get a Bahrain visa on arrival.

However, because Bahrain is currently under all but essential travel advice and the regional war with Iran has created security and transport disruption, many travellers would view the online visa route as the safer planning option rather than relying on airport processing alone.

FCDO crisis registration

This is not an immigration system, but it matters in the current conflict. The FCDO says British nationals in Bahrain should register their presence with the UK government for further updates.

As of 22 March 2026, we did not identify an official Bahrain tourist ETA or publicly announced near-term replacement for the current visa system in the official sources reviewed.

So the current position for UK tourists is:

  • A visa is required for a normal UK tourist trip
  • The official Bahrain eVisa system is active
  • Visa on arrival is also available under the current UK guidance
  • There is no separate Bahrain tourist ETA identified right now
  • Because of the current conflict, the UK also wants British nationals in Bahrain to register their presence

6. Costs for UK tourist entry

Bahrain uses the Bahraini dinar (BHD). For a UK tourist, the main entry cost is the visa.

Approximate pound conversions below use the Central Bank of Bahrain daily rate visible on 22 March 2026 of £1 = BHD 0.501730.

ItemDoes it apply to a normal UK tourist?Amount
Bahrain Visit eVisa for two weeks, single entryYes, this is the standard short tourist routeBHD 13 (about £25.91)
Bahrain 3-month Visit eVisa for British and Irish citizensAlternative longer tourist routeBHD 24 (about £47.83)
Bahrain visa on arrival for UK citizensYes, this route is available under current UK guidance, but I did not identify a clearly separate fee line in the accessible official sources reviewedCheck the official Bahrain visa system before travel

Extension of the 2-week Visit eVisaOnly if you need more timeCheck with NPRA before applying

Multiple entry Visit eVisa valid for 5 yearsNot usually needed for a normal short tourist tripBHD 64 (about £127.56)

Important: the current conflict can affect route planning and practical travel costs in ways that are separate from the visa fee itself, such as last-minute flight changes, insurance issues, or onward travel arrangements.

Use these official pages before booking, before applying, and again shortly before departure:

If your circumstances are unusual, for example dual nationality, a passport close to expiry, non-essential travel during the current conflict, or a road departure plan through Saudi Arabia, rely on the official pages above rather than third-party websites.

Final check before travel

For UK passport holders, the narrow visa answer is clear: you need a visa for Bahrain, and the main tourist routes are the official eVisa system, the embassy route, or visa on arrival. But that is not the most important point right now. The bigger issue is that the FCDO advises against all but essential travel because of the current war involving Iran and the wider regional escalation. For Bahrain in 2026, the visa rules matter, but the security situation, route planning, and contingency planning matter more.
