1. Quick answer

Yes, UK citizens require a visa for tourism in Indonesia. This is most commonly obtained as a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or an e-VoA.

For most British tourists, the essential facts are:

  • You must pay for a 30-day tourist visa (approx. £25).
  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival.
  • Your passport must have at least two blank pages.
  • You must have a return or onward ticket.
  • A Bali Tourist Tax applies if you visit Bali.
  • An Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) must be completed before arrival.

2. Passport and stay rules

Indonesian immigration is strict regarding passport condition and validity. British citizen passport holders must ensure:

  • Validity: At least 6 months remaining on the day you enter Indonesia. Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) are accepted but check specific VoA eligibility.
  • Condition: Your passport must not be damaged (torn, water-stained, or missing pages). Border officers frequently refuse entry for damaged passports.
  • Blank Pages: A minimum of two blank pages is required for the visa sticker and stamps.

A standard tourist stay is 30 days. You can extend this once for an additional 30 days, giving a maximum of 60 days total. Overstaying is a serious offence in Indonesia, resulting in fines of IDR 1,000,000 per day and potential detention or deportation.

3. Visa on Arrival (VoA) and e-VoA

UK citizens are eligible for the Visa on Arrival (VoA). You can purchase this at a dedicated counter before proceeding to immigration, or ideally, apply for an e-VoA (B1 Tourist Visa) online via the official Indonesian immigration portal (molina.imigrasi.go.id) up to 48 hours before travel.

  • Cost: IDR 500,000 (approx. £25).
  • Payment: At airports, you can pay in GBP, USD, or by major credit card.
  • Extension: If you use the e-VoA system, you can often extend your stay online without visiting an immigration office.

4. Bali Tourist Tax (Levy)

Since February 2024, all international tourists arriving in Bali must pay a mandatory Tourist Levy. This is separate from your visa fee.

  • Cost: IDR 150,000 per person (approx. £7.50).
  • Payment Method: It is highly recommended to pay before arrival via the Love Bali website (lovebali.baliprov.go.id) to avoid queues. You will receive a QR code to be scanned at checkpoints.

5. Mandatory electronic forms (e-CD and SATUSEHAT)

Before you can clear customs or immigration, you must complete the following:

  • Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD): You should complete this online (ecd.beacukai.go.id) within 3 days of arrival. You will receive a QR code to scan after collecting your luggage.
  • SATUSEHAT Health Pass: As of May 2026, air passengers are monitored for health risks. Completing the health declaration on the SATUSEHAT app or website before arrival is required to receive your health QR code.
