Kuwait Tourist Visa Requirements for UK Citizens (2026 Guide)

Last checked: 22 May 2026

Planning a trip to Kuwait with a full British citizen passport?

This guide explains the current tourist entry rules for UK travellers, including whether you need a visa, how long you can stay, passport validity rules, what Kuwaiti border officers may ask to see, electronic systems now in use, costs, and the official government links to check before travel.

This article is restricted to tourist entry for UK citizens. It does not cover work, study, residence permits, journalism, volunteering, or long-stay immigration routes except where needed to explain what does not apply to a normal holiday.

Kuwait uses the Kuwaiti dinar (KWD / KD) and is not part of the Schengen area.

Travel warning and insurance

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all but essential travel to Kuwait.

That means Kuwait should not be treated like a routine Gulf stopover or relaxed short-break destination right now. Even though the tourist entry rules themselves are fairly simple, the wider regional security picture is more serious than it would be in a standard low-risk destination.

  • Regional escalation poses significant security risks and has led to travel disruption.
  • The UK Government says the Iranian regime has publicly stated its intention to target locations associated with the United States and Israel.
  • That includes US-linked organisations, businesses, facilities and institutions.
  • You should stay away from areas around security or military facilities and US-linked locations.
  • Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice.

If you are already in Kuwait, it is sensible to register your presence with the UK government for updates and to monitor official alerts, including through the Sahel app.

The current UK advice also says Kuwait airspace has reopened and some flights have restarted, but you should keep departure plans under review. Entry planning by land also matters. The border crossing from Iraq into Kuwait is closed unless special arrangements are made, and British nationals intending to use the visa-on-arrival facility at the Saudi-Kuwait border must contact the British Embassy in Kuwait 24 hours in advance.

Quick answer

Yes, a visa is required for a UK citizen visiting Kuwait for tourism.

For most British tourists, the key points are:

  • You must have a visa to visit Kuwait.
  • You can usually get a visa on arrival in Kuwait or online before travel.
  • Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive.
  • You must be able to show a return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation.
  • The official Kuwait visa portal says the entry permit is valid for 30 days from issuance.
  • The same official visa portal says the maximum stay is 90 days from the date of entry, unless otherwise specified on the visa.
  • I did not identify a separate Kuwait tourist ETA in the official sources reviewed.
  • Most importantly: the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Kuwait.

In simple terms, an ordinary UK tourist needs a Kuwait visa, and the normal route is either visa on arrival or the official online visa route.

Passport and stay rules

If you are travelling to Kuwait as a tourist on a full British citizen passport, your passport should meet these conditions:

  • It must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Kuwait.
  • You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or if you try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
  • If your passport contains an Israeli stamp, you may be refused a visa or refused entry to Kuwait.

UK citizens need a visa to visit Kuwait. The current UK guidance says you can get one on arrival or online.

The official Kuwait visa portal says the entry permit validity is 30 days from the date of issuance and the stay duration is no more than 90 days from the date of entry.

If you want to stay longer, or if your trip is for work or residence rather than tourism, that moves outside normal tourist entry and you need to use Kuwait’s separate immigration routes.

If you are trying to leave Kuwait via Saudi Arabia on emergency documents or with less than 6 months remaining passport validity, the current UK guidance says you should seek official advice first.

What Kuwaiti border control may ask for

For a normal UK tourist trip, the key official requirements mainly focus on a valid passport, the correct visa route, and evidence that your trip is genuine and temporary.

  • A valid passport
  • Your visa, whether obtained online or on arrival
  • A return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking
  • Your passport entry stamp once you have passed immigration

The current UK guidance also says there are strict customs rules. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

It also says that, as a visiting foreign national, you must always carry your passport. It is sensible to keep a separate copy of the passport photo page and your visa or entry stamp as a back-up.

In practice, it is sensible to keep your passport, visa paperwork, accommodation details, and onward or return travel arrangements easy to show.

Electronic systems in use, or coming soon

Kuwait uses official online systems relevant to tourist entry, but I did not identify a separate Kuwait tourist ETA in the official sources reviewed.

There are three systems worth knowing about:

Kuwait Ministry of Interior eVisa portal

The main online route is the official Kuwait Ministry of Interior visa portal. The Kuwait Government Online page describes it as the official e-Visa website, and the portal says visitors can issue a visiting e-visa using the site.

Visa status and immigration e-services

Kuwait’s e-government and Ministry of Interior systems also provide online services to check visa data, follow visa application status, and pay some immigration-related fees. This is useful if you apply online rather than rely on arrival processing.

Sahel app

This is not a tourist visa system, but it matters under the current regional conditions. The FCDO says travellers should download the official Sahel app for more information and updates.

So the current position for UK tourists is:

  • A Kuwait tourist visa is required
  • The normal route is usually visa on arrival or the official online visa route
  • Kuwait uses the official MOI eVisa portal
  • Kuwait also offers online visa status and immigration e-services
  • I did not identify a separate Kuwait tourist ETA

Costs for UK tourist entry

Kuwait uses the Kuwaiti dinar (KWD / KD). For a UK tourist, the main government entry cost is the visa.

Approximate pound conversions below use the Bank of England exchange rate visible on 22 May 2026 of 1 KWD = about £2.55.

ItemDoes it apply to a normal UK tourist?Amount
Kuwait tourist visa on arrival / online tourist visaYesThe accessible official English-language tourism pages reviewed do not clearly publish one fixed tourist fee, so check the live Ministry of Interior portal before payment
Official Kuwaiti visit-visa service pages for some non-tourist visit categoriesNot a final confirmation of the tourist feeKD 3 (about £7.65)
Kuwait tourist ETA / separate pre-travel authorisationNo official system identifiedKD 0 (£0)

Important: the official tourism-focused e-visa pages reviewed do not clearly publish a fixed tourist-visa fee in accessible English. Separate official Kuwaiti government visit-visa service pages do show a KD 3 fixed fee for several visit categories, but because those pages are not tourism-specific, the safest approach is to confirm the live tourist amount on the official Ministry of Interior portal before you pay.

Use these official pages before booking, before applying, and again shortly before departure:

If your circumstances are unusual, for example dual nationality, an Israeli stamp in your passport, a land-border itinerary, or a passport close to expiry, rely on the official pages above rather than third-party websites.

Final check before travel

For UK passport holders, the basic entry answer is clear: you need a visa for Kuwait, and the normal tourist route is usually either visa on arrival or the official online visa route. The main things to get right are your passport validity, your return or onward travel proof, your accommodation details, and the fact that the current FCDO travel advice is much stronger than a normal low-risk destination warning.

The current FCDO position is strong. It advises against all but essential travel to Kuwait because of regional escalation and security risks. It also tells British nationals in Kuwait to register their presence for updates.
