Mongolia Tourist Visa Requirements for UK Citizens (2026 Guide)
Last checked: 8 June 2026
Planning a trip to Mongolia with a full British citizen passport?
This guide explains the current tourist entry rules for UK travellers, including whether you need a visa, how long you can stay, passport validity rules, what Mongolian border officers may ask to see, electronic systems now in use, costs, and the official government links to check before travel.
This article is restricted to tourist entry for UK citizens. It does not cover work, study, residence permits, journalism, volunteering, or long-stay immigration routes except where needed to explain what does not apply to a normal holiday.
Mongolia uses the Mongolian tögrög (MNT / ₮) and is not part of the Schengen area.
Important travel note: There are no current Mongolia-wide FCDO no-travel warning on the official page reviewed. Even so, the FCDO says no travel can be guaranteed safe and that travellers should have appropriate travel insurance covering their itinerary, activities, and emergency costs.

Travel note and insurance
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) does not currently list a Mongolia-wide no-travel advisory on the official page reviewed.
That does not mean risk-free travel. The FCDO says that no travel can be guaranteed safe and that, if you choose to travel, you should research your destination and arrange appropriate travel insurance.
For Mongolia, that means practical preparation matters. It is sensible to make sure your insurance covers remote travel, adventure activities, off-road transport, horse riding, trekking, and emergency medical evacuation if your itinerary includes rural areas.
So while Mongolia is straightforward from a tourist-entry point of view, it is still worth checking the latest official advice again shortly before departure.
Quick answer
No tourist visa is currently required for a UK citizen visiting Mongolia for a normal short holiday.
For most British tourists, the key points are:
- You can visit Mongolia without a visa for tourism for up to 30 days.
- This temporary visa-free arrangement currently runs until 31 December 2026.
- Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive.
- You should make sure your passport is stamped on arrival.
- Your hotel or landlord should register you using an app. If you are travelling independently or staying with friends, you must register yourself with the Mongolian Immigration Agency.
- Kyrgyzstan does not apply here: Mongolia has its own separate eVisa system for travellers who still need a visa.
- I did not identify a separate Mongolia tourist ETA for an ordinary visa-free UK tourist trip.
In simple terms, most UK holidaymakers can travel to Mongolia without applying for a tourist visa in advance, provided the passport rules are met and the trip stays within the current 30-day visa-free tourist allowance.
Passport and stay rules
If you are travelling to Mongolia as a tourist on a full British citizen passport, your passport should meet these conditions:
- It must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Mongolia.
- You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or if you try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
UK citizens can currently visit Mongolia for tourism for up to 30 days without a visa until 31 December 2026.
If you want to stay longer than that, or if you are travelling for work, study, business travel or another non-tourist purpose, you need to meet the Mongolian government’s separate entry requirements and check the correct route before travel.
You should also make sure the border officer stamps your passport. The current UK guidance says that if you do not get a stamp, you could face issues when leaving Mongolia.
Adults travelling with children who are not their own should carry a notarised letter from the parents or legal guardian confirming the arrangement.
What Mongolian border control may ask for
For a normal UK tourist trip, the key official requirements focus on a valid passport, a valid visa where applicable, and correct post-arrival registration.
- A valid passport
- Your passport entry stamp once you have passed immigration
- Your registration details, especially if you are staying independently or with friends
- Your digital residence permit after registration, if issued
The current UK guidance says your hotel or landlord will register you using an app. If you are travelling independently or staying with friends, you must register yourself with the Mongolian Immigration Agency. The agency then issues a digital residence permit that shows your passport number, address, photograph and fingerprints, and you should always carry it while in Mongolia.
Official Mongolian embassy guidance also advises visa-exempt tourists to book a return flight ticket before arriving in Mongolia.
In practice, it is sensible to keep your passport, accommodation details, onward or return travel plans, and registration confirmation easy to show if asked.
Electronic systems in use, or coming soon
Mongolia currently uses official online systems for foreign visitors, but I did not identify a separate tourist ETA for an ordinary visa-free UK tourist trip.
There are three systems worth knowing about:
Mongolia official eVisa system
Mongolia operates the official Electronic Visa Application System at evisa.mn. The Immigration Agency says citizens of eligible countries can apply online, pay the fee online, and receive the result by email.
For an ordinary British citizen tourist, the key point is that this eVisa route is generally not needed because UK passport holders already have the temporary visa-free short-stay tourist route until the end of 2026.
ETA email within the eVisa process
The Immigration Agency says that if an eVisa application is approved, an ETA is sent to the applicant by email. This is part of the eVisa process, not a separate standalone ETA scheme for visa-free UK tourists.
Online registration after arrival
GOV.UK says hotels and landlords register visitors using an app, and independent travellers or visitors staying with friends must register themselves online with the Mongolian Immigration Agency. This leads to a digital residence permit that should be carried while in Mongolia.
So the current position for UK tourists is:
- No tourist visa is required for a normal short UK holiday trip at present
- No separate Mongolia tourist ETA identified right now
- Mongolia does use the official eVisa portal for travellers who need visas
- The eVisa system can issue an ETA email as part of that process
- Mongolia also uses digital post-arrival registration
Costs for UK tourist entry
Mongolia uses the Mongolian tögrög (MNT / ₮). For a normal UK tourist visit, the official entry costs are simple because no tourist visa is required under the current temporary visa-free arrangement.
Approximate pound conversions below use Bank of Mongolia official daily foreign exchange rates visible on 8 June 2026 of US$1 = ₮3,576.35 and £1 = ₮4,808.58.
| Item | Does it apply to a normal UK tourist? | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Mongolia tourist visa for a normal short UK trip until 31 December 2026 | No | ₮0 (£0) |
| Mongolia visa-free tourist entry | Yes | ₮0 (£0) |
| Single-entry Mongolian visa valid for up to 90 days with 30 days stay, for travellers outside the visa-free route | Not applicable to a normal British tourist right now | ₮178,818 (about £37.18) |
| Double-entry Mongolian visa valid for up to 90 days with 30 days stay, for travellers outside the visa-free route | Not applicable to a normal British tourist right now | ₮232,462 (about £48.34) |
| Visa extension fee, 1 to 7 days | Only if you need an extension route that applies to you | ₮40,000 (about £8.32) |
| Mongolia tourist ETA / separate pre-travel authorisation | No official system identified | ₮0 (£0) |
Important: the paid visa rows above are part of Mongolia’s wider visa system and do not apply to an ordinary British citizen tourist using the current visa-free route. If you actually need a visa, check the live official system before paying because standard and priority processing differ.

Final check before travel
For most UK holidaymakers, Mongolia is currently straightforward from an immigration point of view: you do not need a tourist visa for a normal short stay of up to 30 days. The main things to get right are your passport validity, your passport entry stamp, and your post-arrival registration through your hotel, landlord, or your own online registration if you are travelling independently or staying with friends.
